Booker Coplin is an easy kid to underestimate at first glance.

His jersey is a bit baggy and he averaged 8.4 points per game during the regular season. On a Shakopee team full of towering posts, the 6-foot sophomore flies under the radar a bit.

Coplin may be on the radar now after dropping a season-high 20 points, including five 3-pointers in the Sabers' (21-6) 73-69 overtime thriller against Prior Lake on Saturday night.

"I was just definitely feeling it," Coplin said. "It's always nice getting passes from teammates and screens when they know that you're hot."

The Lakers (16-12) struggled to find Coplin when he was on the floor -- he put up 14 points in the first half alone -- but his coach, Bruce Kugath, said his sophomore guard isn't afraid to fire at will from 3-point land.

"We see that from Booker all the time," Kugath said. "We almost have to throttle him down because Booker's mentality is every time he catches the ball he wants to shoot."

Coplin showed flashes of a skill that comes with all great 3-point shooters possess: sneakiness.

Plenty of times throughout the game, especially in the first half, Coplin found ways to get open, slicing and dicing in-and-out of his big posts, 6-foot-7 Jake Maiers and 6-foot-5 Steffon Mitchell.

"I just try to always be on the move and never really stand and watch," Coplin said. "It helps being one of the smaller guys out there on the court."

Kugath agreed, saying his sophomore guard moves well without the ball. He's also a gym rat.

"I'll tell you this: nobody puts in more time than Booker with his shooting," Kugath said. "He's fun to watch. Even when he's missing, he's missing close."

The Sabers now have a date with either Bloomington Kennedy or Bloomington Jefferson in the section 2AAAA championship game on Friday night, and after allowing Prior Lake to come back and tie the game to send it to overtime, Kugath is hoping his team shows a little more consistency late in the game.

He also thinks he'll be playing Jaguars.

"I said this way back, and I don't know if I'll be a prophet or not, but I said when the seeding came out that Jefferson will be in the finals," Kugath said. "We always have trouble with Jefferson because they make us play their game. I expect to see them and I expect to see another game like tonight."
