After watching two possible game-winning shots miss for Robbinsdale Armstrong, Shakopee coach Bruce Kugath didn’t want his team to fall in the second overtime, “We’ve worked too hard to let this get away from us now,” was his message to his team. “They will not score on us. This is our game.”

It turned out to be exactly that, as Shakopee pulled out a thriller in double overtime over fifth-ranked Robbinsdale Armstrong on Saturday, Jan. 11.

Shakopee senior captain Tyler Weiss led all scorers with 20 points.

“This is his fourth year as a player with us, so he is probably going to be our leading scorer,” Kugath said of his 6-foot-8 forward, “We just hope he gives us good, strong leadership.”

Neither team really seemed to hold an advantage at any point, until the final buzzer. The largest lead of the game for either team belonged to Shakopee, who led 8-0 early in the first half.

In such a tight game, Weiss said his main objective was to keep the team focused, “I just tried to be as calm as possible, and keep my team as calm as possible.”

Junior Evan Nolan led Robbinsdale in scoring with 15 points, and Jerome Dixon added 14.

In the first extra session, Armstrong had a chance to win the game after winding the clock down to almost zero, but the shot clanked off the rim. In the second overtime, the Falcons had a chance to tie the game with a buzzer-beater, but the shot again missed, and a Shakopee rebound ended any chance of a third overtime.

The win boosts the Sabres' record to 8-5 for the season. The loss halts Armstrong's eight-game winning streak and drops its record to 10-2.
