Kurt Virgin has resigned in wake of an investigation into his handling of money from sports camps

Eagan High School boys' basketball coach Kurt Virgin, shown coaching a soccer game in 2008, has resigned amid a police investigation into possible financial improprieties at youth sports camps he supervised, Eagan police said Tuesday.

The longtime coach of the Eagan High School boys' basketball team has stepped down amid a police investigation into possible financial improprieties at youth sports camps he supervised.

Kurt Virgin, who was on paid leave while the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District conducted its own investigation, has retired from his position as of Monday, according to the district website.

The resignation, listed as a retirement on the website, was made effective and public on Monday at a regularly scheduled School Board meeting.

On Tuesday, Eagan police issued a news release saying they had recently been contacted by school officials about concerns they had over Virgin's administration of basketball and soccer camps in recent years.

Virgin was placed on leave Nov. 21. As of last month the investigation into Virgin's activities was internal at the school district. But last week Eagan police were notified and decided to conduct an investigation.

"When district officials reviewed the [camps] the coach's administration of the programs was called into question," said Danielle Anselment, the police spokeswoman.

Anselment confirmed that Virgin is the coach being investigated and that the incidents involve the handling of money over several years.

"It appears that it is a monetary concern," Anselment said, noting that there have been a lot of rumors and speculation in the community regarding why Virgin was put on leave and why he stopped coaching the basketball team.

Virgin has been working for the district since 1980, first at Apple Valley High School and then at Eagan. He is also the soccer coach and supervises drivers' education. The district last month said the internal investigation began because a formal complaint was filed against Virgin.
