South St. Paul improved to 3-0 by picking up its best win on the young 2021-22 season.
The Packers (3-0), ranked No. 3 in Class 3A by Minnesota Basketball News, edged No. 10 Mankato East (0-2) 66-62 Saturday morning at the Breakdown Tip Off Classic at Hopkins High School.
Kaiden Moua hit one of two free throws with five seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Senior guard Devin Newsome led South St. Paul, which led 34-29 at halftime, with a game high 28 points. His backcourt mate, senior guard Alonzo Dodd, had 19 points. The two combined for 28 of the Packers’ 32 points in the second half.
Senior forward B.J. Omot led the Cougars with 19 points.
South St. Paul scored in the first five minutes of the second half and led by or close to double digits for much of the second half.
Mankato East rallied late to pull as close as two points in the closing minutes.
