Wayzata wakes up after sleepy first half to cruise past St. Thomas Academy

First report

After trailing by 15 points at halftime, Wayzata exploded with 57 second-half points and turned the game into a 90-64 blowout over St. Thomas Academy on Thursday at the St. Thomas Holiday Classic.

The Trojans, ranked No. 8 in Class 4A by Minnesota Basketball News, relied on Camden Heide’s 10 points in the opening half. He finished with 17. Senior guard Jacob Beeninga led Wayzata scorers with 19 points, 16 of those coming in the second half.

Wayzata (6-2) sophomore guard Kody Williams had 11, senior guard Luke Paulson had 15 and senior guard Connor Hale had 10.

The Cadets (5-3, 1-0) got off to a hot start behind their top scorer, senior guard Jack Thompson, who led all players with 22 points. He came into Thursday’s contest averaging 20 points per game.

Following their 45-point first half, the No. 4-3A Cadets managed just 19 points in the second half. Senior guard Tony Wright was the only other St. Thomas Academy player in double figures with 11 points.
