Dawson Garcia shouldered the load for the Lakers, scoring a game-high 40 points. He also had a big game defensively, pulling down 12 rebounds and blocking a shot.

The last shot Prior Lake’s Dawson Garcia took in the first half of a 74-63 Lakers' win over Shakopee Tuesday was perhaps ill-advised.

Perhaps.

The fact the 6-foot-10 junior forward was maybe 30 feet from the basket definitely was a deterrent. But with a raucous home crowd behind him, and the confidence of five made threes in the half fresh in his mind, it might not have been the worst idea with the clock nearing zero.

It didn’t go in — it probably didn’t deserve to — but it hit rim and gave the Lakers a shot at a putback before time expired. Garcia said he just wanted to see if he could make it.

“That definitely was a heat check, you know?” Garcia said with a laugh.

Garcia scored a season-high 40 points, making baskets from all over — perimeter jump shots with defenders in his face, dunks, as well as the big-man low post baskets one would expect from a 6-10 player.

First Report

In the South Suburban Conference opener for both Prior Lake and Shakopee, the Lakers’ Dawson Garcia was too much for the Sabers to handle.

Garcia scored 40 points to help the Lakers, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A by Minnesota Basketball News, top the No. 9-4A Sabers 74-63 at Prior Lake High School Tuesday night.

Garcia, a 6-10 forward, had a magnificent first half, scoring 24 points and making five three-pointers. He added 12 rebounds and was a force on defense, reining in Shakopee’s Charles Katona, and using his length to tip balls or get steals.

Behind Garcia’s stellar first half, Prior Lake led 41-32 at halftime.

Prior Lake (4-1, 1-0) never quite ran away from Shakopee (4-2, 0-1), which cut the lead to five points in the second half.

Prior Lake’s other 6-foot-10 player, Robert Jones, posted 10 points and 15 rebounds, as well as two blocks.

Will Cordes led Shakopee with 20 points, while Brooks Allen had 13 and Tanner Koenen added 11. Bruce Lockwood Jr. had 10 and Katona scored five.
