For Perham senior guard Carter Cresap, making the first shot is key when it comes to the ability to open up scoring from three-point range. But according to Cresap’s father, Yellowjackets coach Dave Cresap, it might have to do with some fatherly encouragement.

Dave Cresap and his coaches have been encouraging Carter to shoot more three-pointers. He listened and it paid off Saturday. After falling behind 13-2 early, Perham erased the early deficit and held off Caledonia as the Yellowjackets won 66-61 in the Breakdown Tip Off Classic at Hopkins High School.

Though Perham (2-1) is just three games into its schedule, the Yellowjackets might have already seen two of their toughest opponents they’ll face this season.

First Report

After falling behind 13-2 in the early minutes of Saturday’s game, Perham dug itself out of trouble to pick up a big win. The Yellowjackets defeated defending Class 2A runner-up Caledonia 66-61 at Hopkins High School in the Breakdown Tip Off Classic.

Perham, ranked No. 3 in Class 2A by Minnesota Basketball News, bounced back to take a 35-30 halftime lead thanks to the hot shooting of senior guard Carter Cresap. He poured in a trio of three-pointers to help the Yellowjackets to a lead at the break.

In the second half, Cresap knocked down a pair of three-pointers but it was senior guard Josh Jeziorski who stole the show for the Perham (2-1). After scoring three first-half points, the senior tallied an additional 12 in the second half. His play inside was key to Perham holding off Caledonia.

The No. 5-2A Warriors had spurts of success, thanks to an upperclassmen group that included guards Casey Storlie, a senior, and junior Noah King. Storlie had 13 points, including 11 in the second half. King had a team-best 18 points.

Caledonia (2-1, 1-0) finished with four players in double figures in the win. Freshman guard Eli King had 13 points and senior forward Riley Gavin added 14, despite fouling out with minutes to go in the second half.
