Unseeded Delano roars back to defeat Columbia Heights, win 3A title

Calvin Wishart’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament bracket? Don’t ask.

“It’s done,” said Wishart, Delano’s star senior guard. “I had Arizona.”

In keeping with the rash of upsets in the Big Dance, Delano busted many brackets with its 65-61 victory against Columbia Heights. The Tigers became the first unseeded team to win a Class 3A state title in 11 years of state tournament seeding.

Delano (21-11) made the most of its first championship game appearance, rallying from a 33-20 halftime deficit Saturday at Target Center. The Tigers upset No. 4 seed Columbia Heights (22-7) after knocking off third-seeded Mankato East and second-seeded Austin.

In keeping with the rash of upsets in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, the Class 3A boys’ basketball state tournament results busted many brackets.

Delano, with its 65-61 victory against Columbia Heights, became the first unseeded team to win a Class 3A state title in 11 years of state tournament seeding.

Senior forward Keegan O’Neill brought the Tigers back from a 33-20 deficit with 22 of his 30 points in the second half of the title game Saturday at Target Center.
