It's punch and counterpunch at its best.

St. Cloud Cathedral and Esko have grown accustomed to taking each other’s best shot through the years. A state tournament matchup Wednesday at Target Center took it to another level.

Junior guard Nick Schaefer’s two free throws with one minute, 25 seconds left in the third overtime broke the final deadlock, lifting the Crusaders to a 64-60 victory over the Eskomos in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Schaefer paced four Crusaders in double figures with 18 points.

“That was a wild one,” Crusaders coach Matt Meyer said. "They have become the cardiac kids.”

First report

Punch, counterpunch at its best. St. Cloud Cathedral and Esko have grown accustomed to taking each other’s best shot. A state tournament matchup on the big stage wasn’t going to alter it.

Junior guard Nick Schaefer’s two free throws with 1:25 left in the third overtime broke the final deadlock, lifting the Crusaders to a 64-60 victory over the Eskomos in the Class 2A quarterfinals Wednesday at Target Center.

The Crusaders limited Esko to one field goal in the third extra session.

Crusaders junior guard Jackson Jangula’s three-pointer with one minute left in the second overtime forced a third overtime. The Eskomos held on for the last shot, but failed to convert.

St. Cloud Cathedral senior forward Mitchell Plombon made a three-pointer with 11 seconds left in the first overtime to tie it at 52-all. Esko junior guard Camden Berger’s driving layup as well as senior center Adam Trapp’s tip rolled off at the buzzer.

Esko and St. Cloud Cathedral have become well-acquainted over the past three years and grown accustomed to their games coming down to the wire.

They met during the regular season in each of the last three seasons. This season Esko won by three points and in overtime at home while St. Cloud Cathedral prevailed by one on its home floor last season.
