4A: Lakeville North's Wahl scores 25 in victory over Maple Grove

Stars elevate their games at tournament time. Lakeville North junior Tyler Wahl is no exception.

The 6-7 guard had 25 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals to lead the Panthers to an 89-71 victory over Maple Grove in the Class 4A quarterfinals Wednesday at Target Center.

“His versatility is huge for our team,” Panthers coach John Oxton said. “He’s been very, very consistent this year.”

Wahl had 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists to lead the Panthers to an 89-71 victory over Maple Grove in the Class 4A quarterfinals Wednesday at Target Center.

Wahl had eight points and two assists on the Panthers’ first 12 points. It gave his three-point shooting specialists time to get acquainted to the new environment.

Senior guards Collin Denk and Spencer Fossey accounted for three consecutive three-pointers a short time later, and the Panthers (26-4) were off to a 21-10 lead. Denk made the first two of 10 threes in the game for the Panthers.

The Crimson (21-9), who never led in the matchup, closed within 53-51 on Jared Rainey’s two free throws with 10:50 left. Wahl then started a 12-4 spurt with a layup to stretch the lead back to double digits.

Wahl was hardly a one-man show. Junior guard Tommy Jensen added 23 points, and Denk finished with 12.

Junior guard Nate Adams had 16 points, pacing three Crimson players in double figures.
