Springfield's Kieper hits milestone with final basket

Springfield guard Jesse Kieper was glad he didn’t know for sure. Kieper had an idea he was close to getting his  1,000th career point, but wasn’t sure how far away he was.

And he had more important things to worry about, like the Tigers’ 70-58 victory over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the Class 1A championship game.

So Kieper was shocked when he found out that his final point of the game, a free throw with 44 seconds remaining, put him at exactly 1,000 points.

“I thought I was something like 50, 75 points away,” he said. “I didn’t know I was that close. I’m glad I didn’t know. I probably would have thought about it and not played well.”

Third-place games

CLASS 1A: MACCRAY 72, Chisholm 53: The Wolverines raced out to a 20-8 halftime lead and cruised past the Bluejackets.

Seth Hinrichs led MACCRAY with 21 points and added 12 rebounds. Corey Abbas and Brady Boike scored 15 points apiece for the Wolverines.

CLASS 2A: Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 67, Redwood Valley 64: Tate Harmon’s jumper with 6:41 left in the second half helped the Buccaneers complete a comeback and they pulled away from there for the victory.

Harmon and Grant Poper each scored 19 points for Waterville-Elysian-Morris-town.

Redwood Valley’s Michael Busack hit three three-pointers in the final 30 seconds, but it wasn’t enough to help the Cardinals rally. Busack finished with 25 points.

CLASS 3A: Waconia 58, New Prague 53: The Wildcats took a 10-point lead in the second half, then held on for the victory.

Four players scored in double figures for Waconia, led by 15 points from Bronson Scheff. Shelby Moats, had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

CLASS 4A: Osseo 61, Cretin-Derham Hall 57: Joey Sonnenfeld had a game-high 23 points and added nine rebounds, lifting Osseo past Cretin-Derham Hall. DJ Hebert made two free throws in the closing seconds to seal the victory after the Raiders cut the lead to two late. Taylor Montero led Cretin-Derham Hall with 19 points.
