Rochester Lourdes will get a shot at becoming the first Rochester team to win a state boys’ basketball title since 1969 after beating Redwood Valley 48-42 in a quadruple-overtime thriller in the Class 2A semifinals on Friday.

It wasn’t always pretty.

Neither team shot well, and each committed its share of turnovers.

The first half played like a chess match, while the four extra periods — in which the teams combined for 16 points — evoked memories of a pre-shot clock era Minneapolis Lakers contest.

The teams employed similar styles of play in the first half, using patient ball movement and timely cuts to the basket to get points.

Neither team established itself down low, and both struggled from long range.

Each team was 2-for-10 from three-point range at the break, when things were tied 19-19.

In the second half, Lourdes senior forward and scoring leader Alex Kapraun began attacking the rim and accumulating points.

“We went to our 1-3-1 defense for pretty much the whole second half,” Kapraun said. “We knew they were struggling with that a little bit, especially with their small guards up top.”

The Eagles forced 20  turnovers, often leading to points or fouls in transition for Lourdes.

Several Cardinals players came through down the stretch though, including J.T. Radel, who scored the tying bucket that sent the game to its first extra period. Jordan Ford and Alec Koster both hit big three-pointers in the closing minutes of regulation as well to keep the Cardinals alive.

Through the first three OTs, each team had scored only four points.

With .2 seconds remaining in the third OT, Kapraun nearly won it for the Eagles on a well-designed, inbounds-alley-oop attempt that came up just short.

“Here we go again,” Eagles coach Jim Daly said he thought to himself after the play. “Let’s play four [overtimes].”

In the fourth overtime, down 42-41 with 1:22 remaining, Lourdes had not scored and looked to be in trouble.

Kapraun, though, hit a timely three-pointer, giving the Eagles their final lead of the night.

“I can’t say enough about these kids. … These guys are just unbelievable competitors. They refuse to lose,” Daly said.
