First-half hole too deep for MACCRAY to dig itself out of in Class 1A semifinals

Last year, MACCRAY came into the tournament undefeated and ranked No. 1 but lost in the quarterfinals to Ellsworth. This season, the squad was unable to hand top-seeded Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa the same fate, and BBE — which started rolling in the first half and never stopped — continued its unbeaten run toward a 1A title with a decisive 86-69 victory.

“We’re going to celebrate a little bit and then focus on tomorrow,” said Brady Kohler, who scored 13 points in the second half. “Hopefully we can keep this run going because it’s been tons of fun.”

MACCRAY got out to a 19-8 lead in the first half on four quick baskets from Brady Boike, but then Kevin Kuefler, who finished with a game-high 27 points, went on a tear. He ended the half with 20 points, keying a 25-3 run that put the Jaguars up by double digits.

“That might be our best run of the season, especially against a team that good,” coach Dave Montbriand said. “That was impressive.”
