There are games when Osseo junior center Will Johnson does not factor much into his team’s strategy.

And then there are games like the Section 5 championship against Cooper, when Johnson’s physical, all-out style is key to the Orioles’ success.

Johnson scored nine points in Friday’s game, but his rebounding and relentless play set a tone for Osseo, which advanced to the state tournament with a 74-50 rout of the Hawks at Rogers High School.

Starters such as Terez VanPelt (game-high 22 points) and Joey Sonnenfeld (19) made an impact for Osseo. But players such as Johnson came off the bench and added to the Orioles’ arsenal.

“Our bench provided a spark and there was no bigger difference-maker than Will Johnson,” Osseo coach Tim Theisen said.

While No. 2-ranked Osseo (27-2) mixed in role players with great success, Cooper found its options limited. Only three Hawks players scored in the first half and others were only effective in streaks. Freshman Rashad Vaughn was held to four points — eight less than his season average —and did not score in the first half. Conversely, all 10 of Handful Pour’s points came before halftime.

Osseo turned a 33-23 halftime lead into a 46-26 runaway about six minutes into the second half. The Orioles worked possessions and beat the Hawks (19-10) on the glass.

Cooper coach Dave Johnson called a timeout in the second half and told his players to stop shooting themselves out of the game.

“We rushed things a lot,” Johnson said. “We started playing the scoreboard and that is uncharacteristic of us.”

The Hawks were led by Raheem Tyner (18 points) and Pour (10). Foul trouble limited Terrance Averyheart to eight points, about half of his per-game average.
