Attention, state basketball fans: The 4A dynasty alert level has been upgraded to royal blue.

For the third year in a row, Hopkins is state tournament-bound, meaning the Royals have a chance to win a third consecutive Class 4A title.

Senior forward Marvin Singleton made sure of it Tuesday, dropping 27 points to lead the Royals to an 85-65 victory over Wayzata in the Class 4A, Section 6 championship.

With Hopkins alumnus Blake Hoffarber looking on, Singleton and future Gopher Joe Coleman — who dunked four times and scored 18 points — slammed the door on Wayzata’s season and put an exclamation point on their own.

To their credit, the Trojans came out swinging. Led by senior guard Eric Robertson, who finished with 28 points, Wayzata jumped out to a 20-11 lead in the first half.

During the Trojans’ run, Royals coach Ken Novak said he told his team: “Basically, 'Play the possession. Don’t play the score.’ … I didn’t think we were getting very good stops. Robertson really hurt us the whole game.”

Robertson’s aggressive play got him into foul trouble, though, and he was forced to take a seat with three fouls only 11 minutes into the game.

With Robertson on the bench, the Royals pounced. Hopkins point guard Siyani Chambers hit a three-pointer to tie it at 20-20, and then Andre McDonald converted a three-point play to put the Royals ahead.

The momentum shift was palpable — and permanent.

“It feels good, but yet we’re still not satisfied … we have to make sure we come out, take every game, every possession, every time down the floor like it’s our last,” Coleman said.

Class 2A, Section 4 semifinals

Concordia Academy 75, St. Croix Lutheran 72 (2OT): In a game St. Croix Lutheran led most of the way, Concordia Academy made the shot that counted the most. With the score tied and 2.9 seconds to play in the second overtime, senior Jeff Weber banked in a three-pointer, giving the Beacons (20-8) a victory.

The Beacons were led by Lorenzo Davis III with 21 points, followed by Weber’s 18.

The Crusaders (16-12) had a chance to win with less than a second left in regulation, but they missed two free throws. Sophomore Jackson Goplen had a season-high 23 points.
