Raiders beat Forest Lake 87-80 at home

In a close and physical Suburban East Conference battle Friday, Cretin-Derham Hall avenged an 18-point loss to Forest Lake, winning 87-80 at home.

Cretin-Derham Hall (14-5, 10-2 Suburban East) led 40-38 at halftime but took control midway through the second half with relentless defensive pressure. With the Raiders up 58-54, a steal by senior Jon Frey led to a dunk, and moments later, senior Raijon Kelly got in a passing lane and went the other way for a layup, pushing the lead to eight and forcing a Forest Lake timeout.

“We had to turn up the pressure, because they can shoot the ball,” Raiders coach Jerry Kline said. “Our pressure got us some steals, got us some layups, and I give the kids credit.”

It was a big night for Kelly, who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark on a free throw early in the second half. The victory was also the first time Kelly had been on the winning side against the Rangers.

“It took me two years on varsity before this year to beat them,” said Kelly, who was 12-for-12 from the free-throw line in the second half and finished with 20 points, 18 coming after halftime. “But to do it [at home], and get my 1,000th point with my family here, I really enjoyed this.”

Forest Lake (13-6, 7-5), which had won the previous four meetings between the schools and is always a threat to comeback because of its perimeter shooting, was able to cut the deficit to five with just over a minute to play on a long three-pointer by senior Phil Hegseth. But stellar free-throw shooting by Kelly and teammate Taylor Montero sealed the victory.

Junior Tyler Rosenberger led the Rangers with 20 points. Hegseth, who had a game-high 23 in the first meeting of the teams this season, scored 15.
