Hill-Murray upsets Tartan on late tip-in

HILL-MURRAY 64, TARTAN 63: Tartan, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, was handed its first loss of the season in heart-breaking fashion. With eight seconds left, Tartan  led 63-62 but missed two free throws. After a timeout, Hill-Murray’s Rob Daul took a 15-footer from the right side. It missed, but John Duxbury was in the right place at the right time and tipped it in at the buzzer for the win. Hill-Murray played without 6-foot-9 junior center Dave Simmet, who was out with the flu. Hill-Murray senior forward Jim Remke led all scorers with 31 points and also added 10 rebounds

ARMSTRONG 83, MAPLE GROVE 71: Armstrong bounced back from its first loss of the season Tuesday with an impressive all-around performance in beating the visiting Crimson. Senior forward Marquel Curtis scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the first half as the Falcons jumped to an 11-point halftime lead. Armstrong extended the lead in the second half and coasted to victory. Brycen Wojta led Maple Grove with 21 points.

LAKEVLLE SOUTH 65, APPLE VALLEY 46: The Cougars struggled a bit in the first half against a depleted Apple Valley team but upulled away in the second half for the victory. Alex Richter had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Lakeville South, which won its fourth game in a row. Dustin Fronk scored 13 points to lead Apple Valley, whic was alreayd missing point guard Tyus Jones and also played without leading scorer Tom Schalk.

ORONO 67, WATERTOWN-MAYER 53: Orono senior guard Jordan Smith scored his 2,000th career point on his first basket of the game and finished with 22 points to help the Spartans rebound from their first loss of the season to beat the Royals. “When we were winning earlier in the year, our defense was keeping teams under 60 points,” Orono coach Barry Wohlers said. “We’re still not quite in synch offensively, but we re-focused on defense in this game.”

IRONDALE 93, ST. LOUIS PARK 90, 3OT: Perhaps Bryan Sprang knew it was going to be a long night. Irondale’s senior forward and leading scorer tallied just five points in the first half but scored 29 points in the second half and through three overtime periods to give the Knights an exhausting victory. Sprang hit six three-pointers in the game and made all eight of his free throws. St. Louis Park guard Joseph Zangel led all scorers with 35 points and snatched 13 rebounds in a losing cause.

WAYZATA 81, ANOKA 75, 2OT: Wayzata guard Tanner Helgren scored 24 points but none bigger than his three-pointer at the end of the first overtime that sent the game to a second extra session. It was the second time Anoka had been stymied in a chance for victory. The Tornadoes had a chance to win in regulation but missed two free throws and a shot at the buzzer.

ROSEMOUNT 50, PRIOR LAKE 48: Brandon Forcier got loose under the basket on an inboudes play and and hit a game-winning layup with two seconds left in regulation time to give Rosemount the victory.

ROGERS 70, ZIMMERMAN 64, OT: Emotions were running high in this intra-district rivalry and the game lived up the expectations. Zimmerman’s Brandon Giese hit two three-pointers in the final minute of the second half to pull the Thunder into a tie and send the game to overtime. Rogers forward R.J. Dean came up big in the extra period, scoring seven of his nine points, including the first five points of overtime.

CONCORDIA ACADEMY 70, MOUNDS PARK ACADEMY 67, 2OT: Concordia survived a scare from Mounds Park Academy.  the Beacons trailed by 11 points at halftime 30-19 and by seven points with 4:30 left in the game. Jeff Weber, who finished with a career-high 40 points, hit a three-pointer with 10 seconds left in regulation to tie the game 59-59 and send it to overtime. Concordia’s Lorenzo Davis rescued the Beacons in the first overtime with a game-tying basket with 16 seconds left.
