Tartan take out Prior Lake with defense

CHICAGO (ILL.) HYDE PARK 80, ST. PAUL JOHNSON 74: The much anticipated showdown between the state’s top two teams -- Hopkins in Class 4A and St. Paul Johnson in Class 3A -- failed to materialize. The Thunderbirds overcame a 17-point halftime deficit, ending the Governors’ 38-game winning streak in the semifinals of the Best Buy Classic on Wednesday night at Augsburg College. Senior guard Estan Tyler had a game-high 26 points for the Governors. Later, Hopkins held up its end of the bargain by outscoring Minnesota Transitions 103-82. Gophers recruit Joe Coleman had 29 points for the Royals.

TARTAN 53, PRIOR LAKE 35: The Titans win with defense. Tartan limited the Lakers to nine first-half points, and cruised into the finals of its own tournament. Darrion Strong paced a balanced attack with 12 points. Spring Lake Park also reached the championship with an 84-69 victory over Rogers.
