HOPKINS 93, LAKEVILLE SOUTH 89: The Cougars nearly pulled off the unthinkable. Lakeville South battled back from a 17-point deficit to pull within one with just over a minute remaining, only to fall short in its bid to upset Class 4A, No. 1 Hopkins on Tuesday night in Lakeville. The Royals made four consecutive free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win. Hopkins went 25-for-40 from the free-throw line, compared with Lakeville South's 14-for-17. Gopher recruit Joe Coleman scored 33 points, including five dunks, to lead four Royals in double figures. The Cougars' Alex Richter, a senior forward, scored 21 of his game-high 38 points in the second half.

ARMSTRONG 80, BLAINE 71: Senior guard Marquel Curtis nearly matched his early season high of 37 points, scoring 36 as the Falcons beat the Bengals. He scored 37 in a season-opening victory over Minneapolis Southwest.

ST. THOMAS ACADEMY 74, MINNEAPOLIS HENRY 59: The Cadets created 13 turnovers in the first half, building a 20-point lead en route to a victory over the Patriots. Thomas Sjoberg led the way for St. Thomas Academy with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Will Johnson added 18 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

CHASKA 75, APPLE VALLEY 69: Hawks senior forward Jake White is en fuego. White poured in 48 points, lifting Chaska over the Eagles.  White scored 34 and 28 points in the Hawks’ first two games of the season. Apple Valley, playing its first game without injured freshman guard Tyus Jones, was led by senior forward Tom Schalk’s 37 points. Jones is sidelined with a kidney injury.

BLOOMINGTON JEFFERSON 70, CHANHASSEN 65: In a foul-plagued game, Jaguars senior guard Marcus Alipate scored the 1,000th point of his career in a win over the Storm. Matt Hovila and Ryan Gilmer each had 17 points and Alipate finished with 14 for the Jaguars.

MAPLE GROVE 84, ANDOVER 80: The young Crimson presented first-year coach Nick Schroeder with his first home victory, beating the Huskies in Northwest Suburban play. Sophomore  guard James Morris scored 18 of his team-high 20 points in the second half when Maple Grove erased a five-point halftime deficit. Teammate sophomore forward Jake Wieneke added 18 points and eight rebounds, while senior forward Skylar Ellingson hit five key free throws down the stretch to keep Andover at bay.


OSSEO 78, ELK RIVER 43: Senior point guard Terez Vanpelt had 18 points and eight assists while freshman center Ian Theisen added a double-double (16 points and 10 rebounds) as the Orioles downed the Elks. Theisen first year starting. Elk River played a lot of zone defense, which allowed Vanpelt to drive and feed Theisen down low.

PRIOR LAKE 60, WACONIA 57: Freshman guard John Sobaski made a go-ahead layup with 15 seconds remaining as the Lakers edged the Wildcats. Prior Lake made a stop on the ensuing possession and closed out the game with two free throws.
