Tyler Johnson, a senior guard, was recently selected at the Minneapolis City Conference Player of the Year

Forgive Minneapolis North basketball boys’ basketball coach Larry McKenzie for checking to see if there’s any way he can extend Tyler Johnson’s eligibility.

Johnson, a senior guard, was recently selected at the Minneapolis City Conference Player of the Year for the third consecutive season. Johnson, who will play football for the University of Minnesota, has also won three conference football Player of the Year awards, giving him a league-record six.

“We’d love to have him back for another year,” McKenzie laughed. “He’ll be hard to replace.”

Johnson leads the Minneapolis Conference champion Polars in scoring, averaging 17.2 points per game.

Powerful Section 6

While Class 3A boys’ basketball field as a whole may be slightly down this season, that doesn’t apply to Section 6. Six of the top 10 teams in the Class 3A are in Section 6, led by four-time defending state champion DeLaSalle, which earned the top seed. Others are Delano, Waconia, Minneapolis Henry, Orono and Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

Two were eliminated Tuesday when Minneapolis Henry defeated Benilde-St. Margaret’s 83-57 and Orono, the No. 6 seed, defeated Waconia 84-76.

The team that emerges will undoubtedly be considered a favorite to win the state tournament, which is set for March 9-12.
