Class 1A story lines

1. History on Trojans’ side

Top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Rushford-Peterson is making its eighth state tournament trip since 2005. It has won one championship (2006) and been runner-up twice (2005 and 2014). With an experienced lineup and senior leadership, it’s hard to believe that the Trojans won’t be back playing for another title come Saturday. Coach Tom Vix won his 600th game earlier this season.

2. Ready to run and gun

Fond du Lac Ojibwe captured the imagination of the crowd a year ago with its run-and-gun style in its initial appearance in the state tournament. The Ogichidaag, which means Warriors, bounced back from a 7-11 start this season to earn a return trip to Williams Arena. They won 11 of their past 12 games while averaging 88.8 points per game.

3. Don’t be fooled by Falcons’ record

Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City brings an overall record of 21-9 into the quarterfinals. All nine of its setbacks are to Class 2A teams, three to state tournament entrants Breckenridge and Melrose. The Falcons gave Rushford-Peterson a tussle a year ago before falling 71-63 in the opening matchup. They might not be seeded but could advance to the semifinals.
