It should be an exciting time for Polar Bear boy’s hoops this upcoming season. All eight letter winners from last season return after a successful 18-7 record in 2013-14. Coach Chris Tomilla enters his 9th season coaching the FHS boys squad.

A couple of very good scoring seniors will be back. Riley Bernsdorf, who could potentially become the all-time leading scorer at FHS, and Willow Christenson averaged almost 35 ppg between the two of them. Bernsdorf is tough on the glass too, while Christenson is a distributor averaging almost 6 assist/game. Junior Noah Thompson played a critical role as well last season scoring 9 ppg and 7 rebounds per outing.

Floodwood is part of the new aligned “small school” portion of the Polar league and are the likely favorites early on. Cromwell, Wrenshall, and McGregor squads could have a little bit to say about that as they expect good teams themselves. The end of the season with games against those mentioned above could determine the league title. Games against Bigfork, Esko, and Barnum are always huge too.

The Polar Bears are not a big team and have been prone to some defensive lapses in the past that have hurt them. The team will be much more seasoned and mature so there is hope on getting the defense ramped up to a higher level.

On the strength side, the transition game is very good and the outside shooting coming from those mentioned earlier is pretty dependable. It’s possible you’ll see this squad make some state rankings this season due to their successes.

Floodwood expects to contend for the Section 7A titles this season. Teams like Fond du Lac, Mountain Iron-Buhl , Lakeview Christian, and North Woods are the other teams looked as possibilities to represent the small schools from northern Minnesota at state this season.
