Coach Michael Poncelet begins his second season as the leader of the Cardinal Boys program. He & six returning lettermen will be out to improve on last year’s 12-16 finish.
John Lund and Andrew Israelson are returning juniors who received a lot of varsity minutes. Both average around 6 ppg. They’ll be expected to fill the basket up a little more often now with the year experience behind them. Sophomore Gavin Smith is a youngster that Coach Poncelet has high expectations for in filling a large role this season. Blake Connell is a senior who moved into the Staples-Motley school district from Wadena and should make a big impact as well.
This Cardinal team will be a physically strong team that hopes to finish in the top half of the Mid State conference. Detroit Lakes looks to be the top squad to beat there with Crosby-Ironton lurking a little bit behind. Coach Ponecelet’s team would like to be pushing Crosby-Ironton if possible.
Section 5AA early season top dogs look to be Melrose and Sauk Centre. It is the Cards hope that they can potentially be mentioned in this group as well or a sleeper team that must be watched closely. A little lack of team athleticism is a weakness, but solid team play can overcome this should the Cardinals be able to perform that way.
