1 Look who’s back

Edina, ranked No. 2 in the Star Tribune’s preseason poll, is in its first state tournament since 1991. The Hornets overcame losses in their first four games and didn’t crack the .500 mark until January. Graham Woodward’s 26.3 points per game and Reggie Lynch’s six blocks and 8.4 rebounds per game led the turnaround. The Lake Conference champs defeated perennial power Hopkins three times and have won their past 10 games. Two-time All-Metro honoree Woodward holds six school records.

2 Loaded first gamE

No. 2 seed Park Center (26-3) drew a loaded first-round opponent in Lakeville North (23-6), which is built for upsets with Star Tribune All-Metro first-team pick JP Macura leading the effort. The Panthers defeated state tournament qualifier Edina 71-59 in the second game of the season and took Apple Valley to overtime. Park Center, however, feels like it has something to prove. All-Metro guard Quinton Hooker and his teammates prevailed in powerful Section 5.

3 Overcoming losses

Eden Prairie returns for a fourth consecutive year, despite losing half of its final 12 games and enduring the absence of two top players — guard Grant Shaeffer and center Jack Cottrell — for a combined 15 games because of injuries. The pair seems to be healthy now. Speedy guard Andre Wallace (16.1 ppg) has been a consistent force. He will be challenged by a deep Woodbury team that features four players averaging in double figures.
