Point guard leads Roosevelt boys back to .500

A recent five-game winning streak has moved Minneapolis Roosevelt back to the .500 mark on the season with a 10-10 record.

The biggest reason for the Teddies' turnaround, according to coach Rob Mestas, has been the play of junior point guard Demetrius Durant.

Durant scored 111 points and dished out 37 assists in Roosevelt's past four games, capped by a 34-point, 11-assist outing in a 93-59 victory over MetroTech Academy.

Durant is No. 2 in the Minneapolis Conference in scoring, averaging 18.1 points per game.

Minneapolis Henry's Darius Hill leads the league in scoring, averaging 21.1 points.

Travis not the whole show for DeLaSalle

While junior center Reid Travis has received the bulk of the attention, defending Class 3A champion DeLaSalle is far from a one-man team.

In the Islanders' three victories last week -- they routed No. 6, Class 3A Blake 79-54, Concordia Academy 88-57 and Cretin-Derham Hall 85-49 -- the spark came from Luke Scott. The senior guard made 13 three-pointers and averaged 19 points per game.

"He was on fire," DeLaSalle coach Dave Thorson said. "[He did it] while defending the opponent's top offensive player. He had one whale of a week."

Novas' section playoff woes

In every sport there are teams that get a tough break due to their section assignment. Many a great season has come to a quick halt because of a section loaded with talented foes.

This year's Raw Deal Award goes to the Minneapolis Novas boys' hockey team.

The Novas, with new head coach Joe Dziedzic, completed a 20-4-1 campaign that included a 16-game winning streak.

Their reward? A No. 7 seed in Section 6 and a quarterfinal date with Lake Conference champion Minnetonka, the No. 4-ranked team in Class 2A.

Girls' lacrosse commitments

Four west metro girls' lacrosse players, all of whom play for the Minnesota Elite Lacrosse team when they are not playing for their high schools, have made Division I college commitments.

Blake's Lydia Sutton will play for Southern California, while teammate Anne Slusser has committed to Duke. Bloomington Jefferson goalie Oralee Hespenheide also will play for Duke, and Eden Prairie's Anna Johnson has committed to Colorado.
