The Browerville Tigers matched up with the Long Prairie Thunder in Prairie Conference action last Thursday night in Browerville.  Both teams entered the game with one conference loss and looked to keep pace with the undefeated Upsala Cardinals.

Getting a lead and keeping it was important for the Tigers in this one, as Long Prairie used a deliberate style of play on the offensive end eating up a lot of game clock.  “You don't want to get down early against them (Long Prairie), said Coach Schueller.  You might not get enough opportunities to get back in the game.”

Browerville scored first on two Kyle Petermeier baskets before Derek Eberle scored from three point range for the Thunder.  Mitch Heid then scored on a drive to the basket, and after an LP turnover, Heid hit from three point range for a 9 – 3 Tigers lead.  The largest lead for either team in the game did not last long.  Back-to-back 3-pointers by LP tied the score at 9 each.  With 9:43 to go, Heid connected again from three point range to give the Tigers a 14 to 11 lead.  The Thunder then outscored Browerville 11 to 6 to finish the half with a 22 – 20 edge.

The score was tied 7 times in the second half and there were 4 lead changes.  Trent Johnson scored all 10 of his points in the second half.  Two baskets tied the sore and and two others gave the Tigers a lead.

Petermeier tied the score at 48 with two clutch free throws with :42 to go in regulation.  LP had one shot to win the game, but Cody Springers shot rimmed out.

In the first overtime, Browerville missed on their only possession.  LP then stalled for one shot.  This time the Thunder were able to get several attempts, but again came up short.

Browerville again controlled the tip in the second overtime.  This time the tigers elected to let the Thunder remain in the their zone defense and ran the clock down to 1:42 before taking a timeout.  After inbounding the ball, the Tigers again ran the time down to 10.7 seconds before another timeout.  Heid received the ball after the inbound and was able to get the defender in the air and was fouled while attempting a shot.  Heid made the first attempt.  The only point scored in two overtimes proved to be the game winner.  LP rebounded the second attempt, but a final desperation shot fell short.

Kyle Petermeier led all scorers with 19 points while pulling down 9 rebounds, Mitch Heid scored 15 and Trent Johnson had 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Browerville is now 9 – 1 overall and 5 – 1 in the conference and have a busy week ahead.  Monday at Parkers Prairie; Thursday home against Osakis; Friday at Eagle Valley (Clarissa).
