Bison claim double-overtime thriller, 100-95

When you take two strong coaches like Scott Swansson and Nick Guida and their disciplined, tough, and active teams what you have is a great early morning appetizer.  Woodbury guard Renard Suggs scored ten early showing the type of supreme athletic ability that sets him apart as a top 20 player in our state.  His runner in the lane, fast break score, and three at the top of key tie the score at 17.  Buffalo saw five different players score at the start of the game as they utilized their regular top of the line ball movement.

Falling behind a score Coach Guida chewed some tail about his team’s offense and leader Ethan Freer took the words to heart.  Ball movement became crisper and Freer was open to drop in four perimeter jumpers including a pair of treys.  One of those three-pointers was made just before the halftime buzzer which give the Bison a 39-34 halftime advantage.

Five minutes into the second half little had changed.  Both squads were competing at a high level with Woodbury up a point 51-50.  Bison junior Collin Olmscheid scored nine quick points and then Sam Ortmann (notice the last names as both their brothers are now Buffalo legends) chased down a loose board and pitched to Freer for another trey and a 53-51 lead.  The play gave the Bison momentum that built a two basket advantage.  In this game leads don’t last long and a Suggs corner trey brought the Woodbury fans to their feet with ten minutes remaining.

Down the stretch with four minutes remaining Woodbury point guard Robert Claypool fouled out and immediately in his absence guard Jackson Schepp scored off a baseline in-bounds play to give Buffalo a 61-60 lead.  Fifteen seconds later Claypool’s replacement Nick Yan hit his second trey of the game to give the lead back to the Royals at 63-61.  The Royals then built the biggest lead of the game to six points when Diallo Powell sank a trey for a 71-65 advantage with two minutes remaining.

Leads don’t last long in this event though and when Ethan Freer sunk a contested top of the key trey the lead was cut to three.  Powell was fouled the other way making two treys but back the other way Freer went at the rim making a contested lay-in.  Buffalo called a time-out to set up a press but the Royals broke it perfectly getting a lay-in from Mario Franco in the open floor.  Time to breathe easy?  Nope.  Buffalo came back the other way and get a trey from Olmscheid and with 14 seconds to go Woodbury’s lead was two at 77-75.

Going to the line was Renard Suggs who hadn’t scored a point in about ten minutes of game action.  He missed his first attempt and Olmscheid secured the rebound.  While doing so he was fouled and went the other way to make two free throws tying the score at 77 with ten seconds to go.  Down the stretch Suggs missed a shot and in the scramble Buffalo received the ball.  They had a chance at a heave tip-in but it missed and the game went into overtime.

In OT Renard Suggs scored his first points in 11 minutes of game action when he gave the Royals a three point lead on a top of the key trey.  Back the other way Freer scored off the bounce finishing despite being hacked on his forearms.  Buffalo looked like they were going to take the lead but a huge charge take from Yan cancelled a basket.  Woodbury built themselves a five point lead in the extra session and things were looking pretty comfortable.  However, Suggs missed free throws down the stretch and he fouled Jason Senger on a three point shot which put Senger on the line for three free throws and he made them all.  Suggs then had a chance to put the game away but he missed a three and with the score tied at 86 the second overtime began.

In the second session of free hoops Jordan Olmscheid changed the game first with a strong rebound followed by a big time trey that put the Bison ahead 91-86 with three minutes left.  Schepp knocked down two free throws after a steal to give Buffalo the biggest lead of the game at seven  but that was countered by a Suggs triple for a 93-89 score with two minutes hanging on the fancy Tonka scoreboard.   Woodbury got the score down to a pair but with Buffalo sinking all of their free throws (eight in the second session from Schepp) the Royals could get no closer and Buffalo walked away from the Breakdown Tip Off Classic with a huge 100-95 victory.

Great game overall and a fantastic start to the day.
