Whenever Chaska needed a big hit in Monday’s game against Andover, senior left fielder Mason Tangen was there to deliver.

He started the Hawks’ three-run fifth inning with a double. Then, he came through in the 10th inning with a walk-off single. Tangen’s performance was paramount as Chaska defeated Andover in a 10-inning thriller on Monday at Chaska Athletic Park.

The Hawks have lost just once in the early goings of this season as they fell 7-5 to Wayzata in extra innings in their season opener. It’s been a strong start for Chaska despite returning just two varsity starters.

First report

Chaska senior left fielder Mason Tangen had three hits, including a walk-off single, as the Hawks survived a 10-inning thriller and defeated Andover 4-3 on Monday at Chaska Athletic Park.

Both squads threatened to score with baserunners early, but the game remained scoreless through four innings. Andover recorded one hit through the game’s first four innings but managed to leave six runners on base. The Huskies, ranked No. 10 in the latest Class 4A coaches’ poll, finished leaving 13 runners on base in the loss.

In the fifth inning, Andover (1-2, 1-1) found its footing as it jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Husky senior shortstop Paddy Kelly started the rally and came around to score on a fielder’s choice later in the inning. The University of Wisconsin-Superior commit finished the day 1-for-3 with a run scored and two walks.

Chaska (3-1, 0-0) responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs. Tangen started the Hawks’ offense with a two-out double. After Tangen’s hit, senior center fielder Karsen Attebery and senior Maddox Foss each reached base and came around to score in the inning.

The Hawks held their lead until the final out in the top of the 7th inning. Just one strike away from defeat, Husky senior left fielder Nicholas Richards delivered a game-tying RBI single.

The game was not settled until the 10th inning. With the bases loaded, Tangen ripped a single through the infield to deliver Chaska the win.
