The summer after his sophomore season, Buffalo’s Nate Dahl was playing in a summer tournament in Hopkins that Bison coach Josh Ortmann was attending. While Ortmann had seen Dahl plenty previously, this version of Dahl was something the Buffalo coaching staff had not seen before.

“I think there was a game where he hit 3 or 4 three-pointers, he was at the rim, getting free throws,” Ortmann said. “You look at the scoresheet, he’s got 14 rebounds. Who is this 5-foot-11, 6-foot kid doing that?”

Since that summer, performances like that have become par for the course for Dahl. He proved that Friday against Hopkins. The senior standout came through big-time for his team as he poured in 33 points and 11 rebounds to help Buffalo to a 73-62 victory.

First Report

After Hopkins and Buffalo each traded runs in Friday’s game, the Bison got their biggest run of the game when it counted most as they went on 17-0 run late in the second half to knock off the Royals, 73-62, for the second time this season.

Buffalo (20-5, 7-4) opened up a double-digit lead in the first half, with the biggest contribution coming from senior guard Nate Dahl. Besides eclipsing the 1,000-point mark in his high school career on Friday, Dahl poured in 15 first-half points and finished with a game-high 33 and had a double-double with 11 rebounds.

Hopkins (16-8, 6-5) responded and got within two points before halftime. Sophomore guard JJ Semanko got the Royals going with his shooting from distance. Semanko knocked down four 3-pointers in Friday’s game to finish with a team-high 17 points.

The Royals, ranked No. 7 in Class 4A by Minnesota Basketball News, clawed ahead early in the second half. Sophomore guard Anthony Smith and freshman guard Jayden Moore led the way in the backcourt for Hopkins as Smith poured in 16 points while Moore scored 10 points.

Trailing 56-53, the Bison turned things to another gear as they scored 17 points unanswered and took control of Friday’s game. Dahl continued his high scoring while seeing his teammates make big plays. Junior guard Grady Guida tallied 12 points while sophomore Ty Torgrimson added 11 points.
