Facing a team that they lost to by 19 points earlier in the season, Eden Prairie knew they had to enter Friday’s Class 4A Section 2 Championship game with a tough mental attitude. In doing so, it defeated a strong offensive team, one which only lost three games during the season, with a decisive 75-60 victory against Shakopee to earn the section championship title.
Head coach David Flom was confident that his Eagles (19-10) were in a different, much improved place than they were during the season’s earlier rout at the hands of Shakopee.
After losing to Shakopee by 19 points in the teams’ only other meeting this season, Eden Prairie got its revenge on Friday night at Shakopee High School, winning 75-60 to take the Class 4A, Section 2 championship title.
The Eagles got off to a fast start, holding back a dominant Shakopee offense — one which has recorded 80 or more points in 14 games this season — and took a 32-27 lead into halftime. They picked up the pace even more in the second half of the game, scoring 43 second-half points.
Chiddi Obiazor led the Eagles’ offense, tying a season high with 29 points. Bradley Frisch and Jermell Taylor each contributed 10 points.
Yonis Mohamud led the Sabers with 16 points, followed by Cade McGraw and Nick Katona with 15 points each.
With the win, the Eagles move on to the state tournament next week.
