Barreling down the lane late in Friday’s game, Chaska senior forward Brady Nicholson threw down a dunk and elicited a big reaction from the Hawks’ bench.

For one, it was the basket that gave Nicholson his 1,000th career point. The slam also helped put the finishing touches on a big road win for Chaska.

Nicholson has been a senior leader responsible for a lot of things this season for the Hawks. That includes the team’s late-season tear and the 68-62 win against the Spartans on Friday where Nicholson exploded for 25 points in the win.

As a team that has routinely been at the top of the Metro West Conference season and a contender in Class 4A, Section 2, the Hawks’ 2021-22 season has not followed its normal run of success. Chaska started the season 1-11.

First Report

After eking out a 61-59 win against Orono on Jan. 24, Chaska went on the road and took down its conference rival for a second time this season as the Hawks won 68-62 at Orono High School.

The first half was a bit of a roller coaster for both squads. The Hawks came out with eight of the game’s first 10 points.

Orono, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A by Minnesota Basketball News countered, however, leading by as many as nine points in the first half. Junior guard Isaiah Hagen led the charge with 14 points but missed the final minutes of the first half with an injury.

Without Hagen on the floor, Chaska (9-15, 8-8) rallied and tied the game at 29 heading into halftime. Hawks senior forward Brady Nicholson starred with 10 points in the first half and 25 in the game.

In the second half, Hagen returned for the Spartans (18-6, 11-5) and scored 27 points. With his teammates struggling shooting, the only other Orono player to hit the 10-point threshold was senior guard Jake Farrell, who finished with 10 points.

As for Chaska, the ball found its way to Nicholson throughout the contest. The only other Hawk with at least 10 points was junior guard Maddox Foss, who finished with 12 points.
