As the defending Class 4A state champion, Wayzata knew it was going to receive every opponent’s best shot this season.

The Trojans have not hid from the challenge, scheduling a slew of state-ranked foes to prepare for the title defense come March.

Another chance to pad the resume came Wednesday when they hit the road east to East Ridge for a matchup of No. 4 at No. 3, per the Feb. 2 Minnesota Basketball News Class 4A rankings.

The problem?

Wayzata (13-4) was without one of the top players in the state, senior 6-foot-9 forward Carter Bjerke. The St. Thomas commit who averages nearly 20 minutes per game was sidelined with an ankle injury.

First Report

Shorthanded Wayzata went on the road to gut out a signature win.

Wayzata erased a four-point halftime deficit to win 59-55 Wednesday at East Ridge, despite the absence of future University of St. Thomas forward Carter Bjerke, who was sidelined with an ankle injury.

The Trojans, which are No. 4 in the Feb. 2 Minnesota Basketball News Class 4A rankings, were paced by 16 points by junior guard Hayden Tibbits, who was crucial at the free throw line down the stretch.

Junior forward Spencer Hall added 14 points for Wayzata.

The No. 3-4A Raptors were led by 17 points from senior forward Kendall Blue, who will be joining Bjerke at St. Thomas next season.

East Ridge led by as much as nine in the first half and never trailed by more than five.
