Wayzata guard Eddie Beeninga surveyed the situation and did what has become familiar to Trojans fans over the years: Took over the game and led his team to victory.

The senior guard scored 17 points of his game-high 26 points after halftime, leading Wayzata (17-2) back from a six-point halftime deficit to a 78-69 victory over Duluth East in the Class 4A quarterfinals at Osseo High School.

Beeninga family members have been leading Wayzata basketball to victories for almost a decade. First, oldest brother Johnny, then Jacob, who finished as the leading scorer in school history.

Lately, it’s been Eddie’s turn. He scored 29 points in a victory over Cooper in the Section 5 championship game last week. On Wednesday he navigated the lane with slashing, pinballing drives often enough to help the Trojans turn away stubborn Duluth East.

“He stepped in the section finals, too,” Wayzata coach Bryan Schnettler said. “I think what’s been happening is that other teams know our other guys can play and shoot, too, so that opens up driving lanes for him and he took advantage of it. He’s been awesome all year. He’s been one of the best guards in the state.”

Said Beeninga, “I was just taking it to the rim, getting good shots up, and they just kept coming to me. Once I found my rhythm, it was pretty easy from there.”
