From spring break to fast breaks, basketball state tournaments start all over Minnesota

Ten teams will play at Osseo High School in first-round games that sort classes by geography without true No. 1 seeds. Plus the complete schedule of games.

Instead of Target Center and Williams Arena hosting the high school basketball state tournament quarterfinals Tuesday and Wednesday, Minnesota’s top girls’ and boys’ teams will start play in more ordinary venues.

Osseo High School, for example. The school is on spring break, making it possible for the gym to host five quarterfinal games full of fast breaks. Two of the girls’ Class 4A games will be Tuesday, with Chaska playing Stillwater at 4 p.m., followed by Elk River vs Centennial at 7 p.m.

The next day, Osseo hosts three boys’ quarterfinals, starting with a Class 2A matchup between Minneapolis North and Moose Lake-Willow River at 1 p.m. Then Class 4A teams move in, with Wayzata vs. Duluth East at 4 pm and Champlin Park vs. Maple Grove capping off a triple-header.

Nine other regional sites will host games, seeking to limit travel amid the same COVID-19 disruptions that started a year ago when the girls’ state tournament was canceled on the eve of championships. The boys’ tournament, set for a week later, never got underway.

This year the two tournaments are being held at the same time, the result of squeezing in postseasons after the regular season was delayed six weeks by state orders seeking to control spread of the virus.

Seeding is different, too. Instead of having traditional top seeds, the Minnesota State High School League divided its eight competitive sections by geography. The South sections are 1, 2, 3 and 4 and the North sections are 5, 6, 7 and 8. The No. 1 vs. the No. 4 seeds and No. 2 vs. 3 seeds on both the north and south sides of the bracket meet in the quarterfinals.

The other regional sites, all hosting games Tuesday and Wednesday, include Alexandria, Chanhassen, East Ridge, Hastings, Mankato East, Perham, Pequot Lakes, St. Cloud Tech and Rochester Mayo.

The tournaments will move to Target Center for semifinals on April 6-8. The four classes’ of girls’ championships are April 9, with the boys’ classes playing the next day.
