Momentum. That was the word on the lips of Prior Lake coach Jon Miller and his standout forward, Dawson Garcia.

The Lakers suffered some growing pains early this season, but a 71-64 overtime win at previously unbeaten Lakeville South showed where their potential can take them.

“We’ve been through adversity all year,” said Garcia, who poured in a game-high 28 points. “We just found a way to squeak through tonight and it’s good now we’re going to be rolling on momentum.”

Miller, in his first year helming the Lakers, entered the season with one of the state’s top talents at his disposal in the 6-foot-11 senior Garcia, who headed a 25-4 squad in 2018-19. The rest of the roster, though, had plenty of question marks.

First Report

Prior Lake handed Lakeville South its first loss of the season in an overtime thriller Friday at Lakeville High School.

Prior Lake (6-4, 3-1) rode a 28-point effort by Dawson Garcia to win 71-64.

The visiting Lakers took a 32-27 halftime lead thanks to 11 points by Garcia and nine from Malcolm Jones.

Lakeville South, ranked No. 10 in Class 4A by Minnesota Basketball News, entered the game holding its last seven opponents to 47 points or fewer. The Cougars extended their defensive pressure to get the Lakers out of rhythm and jump ahead with under 12 minutes to play.

Garcia, a senior forward committed to Marquette, drove the length of the court for a layup with under five seconds left to send the game to overtime at 59.

Lakeville South (10-1, 3-1) hit a free throw to go up 60-59 early in overtime, but a 12-3 closing run locked up the Lakers’ sixth straight win between the two teams.
