The Bluejackets, who have packed their travel schedule with long road trips against difficult metro opponents this winter, lost to the Hylanders by two points at the Southside Super Showcase.

The Hibbing boys’ basketball team has dubbed this season: "The Road to 4K."

Before the season began, Bluejackets coach Joel McDonald got out a map and tracked the miles his team would travel to play games this season. After feeding the numbers into a calculator, he realized his team had committed to roughly four thousand miles of travel — with the last stretch hopefully coming as the result of a trip to the state tournament.

"Coach didn't just tell us we were going to play teams like Columbia Heights, and Hopkins and Minnehaha Academy," sophomore point guard Ayden McDonald said. "He put out a questionnaire, and as a team we said we wanted to play those teams. We know we have to play teams like this to get better — but they're far away from us."

So, Hibbing rode the bus 200 miles south for Saturday’s Southside Super Showcase hosted at Minnehaha Academy. Though the final result for the Bluejackets was a 62-60 loss to Columbia Heights, Joel McDonald thinks his team will be better because of the experience.

"As much as we can watch film, and tell guys what to expect, until you're on the court and in the heat of battle, we don't really know what it's like," he said. "I'm a little disappointed in the way we responded, but we did have a chance at the end."

First Report

Jordan Jones scored a game-high 28 points to lead Columbia Heights to a 62-60 victory over Hibbing at the Southside Super Showcase hosted at Minnehaha Academy on Saturday afternoon.

The tight contest, which included eight ties and 13 lead changes, never saw either team lead by more than five points until there was just 5:05 to play in the second half. That’s when the Hylanders built a 54-47 advantage, then hung on for the victory.

Columbia Heights (4-0, 0-0) took control of the game with a 10-2 run that led to the 54-47 lead, with Jones scoring six of those points.

Jamez Garner and Muja Burton backed Jones' scoring with nine points apiece.

Hibbing, ranked No. 10 in Class 3A by Minnesota Basketball News, was led by Mayson Brown who finished with 24 points. Tre Holmes added 14 points for the Bluejackets (2-1, 2-0).
