At Maple Grove, there’s a bit of a connection between golf and basketball.

Take senior guard Nate Adams. He and the Crimson golf team won the Class 3A state title last year. Now, with Maple Grove (23-6) returning to the boys' basketball state tournament for the fourth straight year, Adams and his hardwood teammates get another chance to compete for a championship.

First Report

In a rematch of last year’s Class 4A, Section 8 championship, Maple Grove advances yet again to the state tournament for the fourth straight year, as the Crimson claimed a 77-64 win over Buffalo on Thursday at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

An 8-2 run early gave Buffalo (22-7) a 13-8 lead, but the top-seeded Crimson (23-6) finished the first half on a 37-15 run to go up 45-28 at the break.

The No. 2 seed Bison twice got back within seven points in the second half after being down as much as 17, but Maple Grove made its free throws down the stretch to seal the game.

Maple Grove’s Jared Rainey led all scorers with 23 points, teammate Nate Adams adding 15, Kyle Dreyer scoring 14 and Caden Boettcher with 12.

The Bison had all five starters score in double figures, led by Matthew Willert’s 14 points. Tony Dahl and Brandon Maatz had 13 points apiece, while Aidan Bouman scored 12 and Antonio Bluiett finished with 10.
