Maple River overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat Breckenridge, 78-72 in the Class 2A quarterfinals Thursday at Williams Arena.

The Eagles advanced to the semifinals and will face Caledonia on Friday at Target Center.

Maple River shot just 29.6 percent from the field in the first half but made 13 of its 24 shot attempts in the second half.

“We just couldn’t make anything [in the first half],” said senior center Grant Sonnek, who finished with 16 points and six rebounds. “We were just fading away, the ball wasn’t going in, but we just had to keep shooting.”

The Eagles controlled the game for the final 12 minutes after a 12-3 run that gave them a 60-50 lead. They held off a late Breckenridge run by sinking seven of eight free throws in the final minute.

“I think anytime you gain the lead in the second half when you haven’t had it, it’s a momentum swing,” Maple River head coach Chad Ostermann said. “It kind of helps you get over that hump.”

Eagles sophomore guard Jeff Lewis had a game-high 25 points. Junior guard Ashton Hegge led the Cowboys with 17 points.
