Mahtomedi at St. Thomas Academy
7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 30

Mahtomedi and St. Thomas Academy are still in the running for a Metro East Conference championship, but both teams have an uphill climb to win it. The ascent starts Jan. 30, when the Zephyrs and the No. 6-3A Cadets square off in their second league matchup of the season.

Mahtomedi (11-6, 6-3) defended its home floor with a 49-45 upset of St. Thomas Academy on Jan. 6. The Zephyrs did a good job of limiting Cadets’ leading scorer Ryan Jacobsen, holding him to just nine points.

St. Thomas Academy (11-6, 6-3) and coach Mike Sjoberg need Jacobsen, who averages 19.1 points per game, to return to form in this matchup with Mahtomedi.

The Zephyrs needed a season-high 17 points from senior guard Sam Mustar to win the first meeting, as the Cadets held Mahtomedi's leading scorers, senior center Sean Hjelle (15.3 ppg) and senior guard Sam Newman (9.9 ppg), to just 13 total points.
