Parkhurst's injury puts a hole in the starting lineup
By Gabe Anderson

The Heritage boys' varsity basketball team’s regular season opener left them with a bittersweet taste in their mouths. On one hand, they defeated Central Minnesota Christian 80-41, but on the other hand, the squad lost starting guard and captain Evan Parkhurst for the remaining of the regular season by way of a broken scaphoid bones in both wrists, which he sustained in the game. Parkhurst had a screws surgically fused into his right wrist to combat the problem.
The MRI taken on his left wrist found breaks, but, fortunately, no dislocation, though a cast is still required. The injury will keep Evan off the court for six to eight weeks, which is a much shorter time line then early predictions which estimated that he would not be able to return to the team by at least March when the section playoffs begin.
The injury leaves the Eagles an open spot in the starting lineup. junior forward Spenser Bland has filled in

Strength of the MCAA
By Gabe Anderson
Once again, the MCAA conference is locked and loaded with talent as seen in their non conference play. For example, Lester Prairie defeated Sleepy Eye Saint Marry who was ranked #6 in 1a's preseason rankings, New Life defeated state participant from 2012 St. Croix Lutheran by 20, Maranatha defeated a four a school, number 9 ranked on ESPN top 50 juniors Rashad Vaghn led Cooper 96-94 in overtime and Heritage and West both defeated #4 ranked 1a Lakeview Christian. The conference has two teams in the top 10 1a school rankings in #1 Maranatha and #3 Heritage. On the strength of the conference senior guard Cole Peterson said "It (the conference) is super strong. There are a lot of tough teams". The winner of the conference has the implications of making a lot of noise in the state tournament.

Pursuit of 1000
By Gabe Anderson
Senior Forward Zach Weld is inching dangerously close to a mile stone. He is 69 points away from the coveted 1000 point mark. When he reaches this mark he will become the fifth Eagle in school history to accomplish this feat along with Nick Parkhurst, John Hirte, Stew Herman and current teammate Bradley Basco. On what reaching the point mark would mean to him, Zach responded "I am trying to follow in the footsteps of greatness, namely Stewart Herman (the schools all time leading scorer)". Striving to be the best is what ultimately makes Weld the player he is, a legend. If Zach were to continue at his 20 points per game pace he would reach the checkpoint on 1/15 @ Maranatha Christian Academy.

Heritage wins Christmas tournament
by Gabe Anderson
The Eagles won the “Park Rapids Winter Classic” for the second year in a row over Christmas break. They defeated Nevis in the semifinals 60-34 despite being without senior forward Brad Basco who was out with flue like symptoms. His spot in the starting lineup was filled by senior forward Gabe Anderson. Basco was back for the championship game against Park Rapids Area High school. The Eagles were short on rest and sleepwalked through the game but still came away with a 66-57 victory. Despite the lackadaisical effort senior guard Zach Weld is not concerned “We played well the first game and got the easy win second game we played sloppy and persevered and got the win” said senior guard Zach Weld. “All in all, it’s tough to play on back to nights. In the end winning the tournament was our goal and we accomplished this goal.”
