See who was voted the top performer for Dec. 11-16

Player of the Week winner

Cole Bothun, Schaeffer Academy. Something’s going on at Schaeffer Academy and has been since last season when the Lions went 21-6, only the second time the school has posted a winning season. Look no further than Cole Bothun, who has Schaeffer Academy off to a 7-0 start this year. Bothun scored 26 against Grand Meadow in a 60-58 win where he hit six three-pointers. He finished with 19 points on 5 of 7 shooting against West Central, an Iowa team, in a 66-17 win.

Player of the Week candidates

Matthew Hurt, Rochester John Marshall. The monster numbers continue to roll in for Hurt, a junior who is a five-star recruit with the Rockets. He scored a season-high 48 points in an 83-61 win over Red Wing, then scored 39 against Albert Lea in a 110-33 win and capped the week with a 40-point game against Osseo. He’s averaging 42.2 points per game and has only failed to score 40 or more twice this season. Plus, he’s averaging 14 rebounds a game.

Calvin Wishart, Delano. It took Edina, Minnesota Basketball News'  No. 1 team in Class 4A, to slow Wishart down, as he put up 18 points in an 87-57 loss. Wishart is averaging 32.2 points per game and scored 32 the previous game against St. Paul Central in an 84-70 win.

Tre Jones, Apple Valley. Jones is leading the Eagles with 29 points a game and 10.6 rebounds per game. He continued to put up astonishing numbers again last week when he tallied 40 points for No. 4-4A Apple Valley in a 71-66 loss to Edina. Jones hit 17 of 34 shots in the loss and went on to score 27 in a 65-64 win over St. Thomas Academy where he made 8 of 16 shots.

Cole Nicholson, Chaska. Nicholson jump started the Hawks last week in a big 62-55 win over No. 7-4A Lakeville North with 24 points. He posted 24 again the next game in a 66-44 win over St. Paul Highland Park for Chaska, which seeks a return trip to the Class 4A state tournament.

Michael Jones, Woodbury. Jones and the Royals are on a three-game winning streak after starting the year with losses to No. 7-4A Lakeville North and No. 9-4A Wayzata. Jones scored 39 points each in back-to-back games last week for No. 14-4A Woodbury in wins over Lakeville South and Forest Lake.

Jake Binley, Simley. Simley is off to a 5-0 start and Binley is a big reason why. Binley is averaging 27.5 points per game after scoring 41 in a 76-65 win over St. Paul Como Park. That came after he scored 28 in an 81-63 win over St. Paul Harding a night earlier.

Beijan Newbern, Maranatha. Newbern is putting together a tremendous season and continued that last week with a 34-point game against Christ’s Household of Faith behind a 15-for-25 shooting performance. He’s averaging 27.4 points per game for the Mustangs.

Michael Schaefer, St. Cloud Cathedral. Schaefer had a monster night in a 72-57 win over St. Cloud Apollo when he scored 39 points. He had 19 of those points from the line and pulled down 16 rebounds. He’s averaging 27.2 points per game and 13.2 rebounds a game for the No. 5-2A Crusaders.

Malik Bodden, Groves Academy. Bodden scored 38 points in a 92-77 win over Hmong Academy on 14-for-25 shooting. He followed that with an even better shooting game in a 32-point performance against Ogilvie in a 73-54 win. He shot 13 of 18 from the field in the win.
