Class 4A

Section 1

Lakeville North, ranked fourth in Class 4A by Minnesota Basketball News, looks poised to make its sixth consecutive state tournament appearance out of Section 1. 10th-ranked and second-seeded New Prague and No. 3 Rochester John Marshall, who’s fallen to the Panthers in the championship round four years in a row, present a challenge at the bottom of the bracket.

Section 2

17th-ranked Chaska took the top-seed ahead of its Metro West co-champion, No. 18-ranked Bloomington Jefferson. Lake Conference competitors Eden Prairie and Edina took the third and the fourth seed, but both teams are ranked above the top two seeds with the Eagles at No. 15 and the Hornets at No. 16.

Section 4

The Metro East Conference championship was split by East Ridge and Woodbury, and the Section 4 championship could very well be played between the two rivals as the seventh-ranked Raptors took the top seed and the No. 11-ranked Royals earned the No. 2 seed. Woodbury may have to play No. 8-ranked and third-seeded Tartan in the semifinals, while East Ridge also has a challenge in its semis with the potential of facing No. 14-ranked Cretin-Derham Hall.

Section 5

Champlin Park completed its second unbeaten regular season in the past three years and reclaimed its top-rank into section play. Park Center, ranked No. 13, took the second seed ahead of No. 13-ranked Osseo who could face the Pirates in a rubber match in the semifinals.

Section 6

Lake Conference co-champions, No. 5-ranked Wayzata and No. 6 Hopkins, took the first two seeds after splitting games this season. The Trojans are seeking their first state tournament berth since 1959 and face fourth-seeded St. Louis Park in the first round. The Royals are aiming for their eighth appearance in the past nine seasons but will have to get past No. 9-ranked and third-seeded Robbinsdale Armstrong if the Falcons defeat crosstown rival Robbinsdale Cooper.

Class 3A

Section 2

Fifth-ranked Marshall secured the top seed, despite falling to second-seeded Waseca 54-50 in its regular season finale. The defending section champion Bluejays lost the first meeting with the Tigers this season. Last year’s section championship went to quadruple overtime and saw three buzzer beaters between the two teams.

Section 6

DeLaSalle embarks on another run to the state tournament where the Islanders, ranked the top team in Class 3A, aim to extend their unprecedented run of five consecutive state championships. Second-seeded and fourth-ranked Orono has won seven straight and is the last program to win the Class 3A title in 2011 before the Islanders’ run. Sixth-ranked Minneapolis Henry and No. 7 Delano are both candidates to shake up the bracket.

Section 8

Fergus Falls’ 20 wins propelled the Otters, ranked No. 11 in Class 3A, to the high seed ahead of a No. 13-ranked Alexandria team that swept Fergus Falls in the regular season. The second-seeded Cardinals will have to get past Thief River Falls and potentially No. 19-ranked and third-seeded Bemidji if the Lumberjacks can get past Sartell-St. Stephen.

Class 2A

Section 4

Top-ranked Minnehaha Academy earned a first round bye after winning 13 straight games to end the regular season. Fourth-seeded St. Croix Lutheran is the highest seed the Redhawks could face on their side of the bracket. Third-seeded New Life Academy kept with Minnehaha Academy in their regular season meeting in a 59-54 loss on Jan. 3, but will have to get past second-seeded Minneapolis Roosevelt for a rematch against the Redhawks.

Section 5

19th-ranked Brooklyn Center took the No. 1 seed in front of No. 10-ranked Watertown-Mayer, No. 13 Annandale and No. 12 Eden Valley-Watkins. Third-seeded Annandale could meet the Royals for a third time this season in the semifinals after the Cardinals won 55-50 to begin a seven-game winning streak that led to clinching the Wright County West Division. The Centaurs’ half of the bracket doesn’t appear any easier with a potential matchup with the fourth-seeded Eagles in the semis.

Section 7

Top-seeded Esko is looking for its fifth straight state tournament berth amongst a Section 7 field that boasts four teams with 20 or more wins this season. Fourth-ranked Crosby-Ironton beat the No. 6 Eskomos 58-55 on a buzzer beater on Feb. 28, and only has one loss on the season to Detroit Lakes. The Rangers, seeded second, will have to weather the loaded half of the bracket that has Virginia (23-4) and Hinckley-Finlayson (20-4), who they beat 52-51on Feb. 24.

Class 1A

Section 4

Defending Class 1A champion and top-ranked Minneapolis North begins its postseason run for a repeat with the top seed in Section 4. Third-ranked Heritage Christian earned the second seed, but will need a spark in the postseason after dropping three of their past five games. Prairie Seeds Academy has won its past six games to solidify its bid for the No. 3 seed.

Section 5

Nevis earned the North subsection high seed after piecing together a 19-game winning streak and climbing the Class 1A ranks to the No. 2 spot. Browerville, ranked No. 13 in Class 1A, took the top seed in the South subsection and is the defending Section 5 champion.

Section 8

Red Lake, ranked No. 7 in Class 1A, is hoping to make it four straight tournament appearances, but will have to get past either a high-scoring Cass Lake-Bena, who’s seeded second in the East subsection, and No. 16-ranked Win-E-Mac. Ninth-ranked Ada-Borup took the top seed in the West subsection and could face Stephen-Argyle who recently broke into the Class 1A Top 20.
