There were a number of reasons for Woodbury to celebrate Friday night after the Royals edged Forest Lake 83-77 in a Suburban East battle to end the regular season.

First thing’s first: Woodbury (19-7, 14-2) staved off a hungry Forest Lake team that made the Royals sweat in the final minute. At one point, as the clock ticked toward zero, the Rangers had three different opportunities to tie the game with attempts from behind the arc. The shots didn’t fall, and Woodbury took its chances to tack on extra game-sealing points.

Secondly, it was senior night -- a special senior night for the six Royals making up the Class of 2017. Winning at home to close the regular season also meant Woodbury will share the regular season title with crosstown rival East Ridge.

And, of course, Woodbury’s go-to scoring machine all year, 6-foot-4 junior guard Michael Jones put up a cool 30 points, including a special pair of free-throws with 5:55 to go in the first half that put Jones over the 1,000 career point mark. Woodbury coach Kent Getzlaff summed up Jones’ play as part of the glue that makes up a Royals team eager to make a splash in forthcoming sectional play.

“(He’s a) great shooter, turned into a great overall player, he’s a terrific teammate who’s turned into a real leader and just fits in with a bunch of high-character guys that are easy to coach,” Getzlaff said.

Heading into Friday night, Jones was averaging 25.1 points per game and had scored 602 points this year.

“Obviously you’re not going out looking for points, you’re not looking for dubs, but it’s nice to reach a milestone,” Jones said. “You set personal goals, you set team goals, and, well, it’s a big personal goal.”

Woodbury seniors Ike Thilgen put up 17 points and Jake West added 11 against a Forest Lake team that was without senior powerhouse Mitch Jerde. The Royals will be looking for the No. 2 seed going into sections.

“We’ve had a couple tough games this year and I think that’s gonna prepare us for obviously a really tough section we got. One of our goals, one of our team goals, is to win the section, so we’re going to aspire to that,” Jones said.

Forest Lake (17-9, 10-6) ended its regular season with a near-miss and its first loss in five games. Senior guard Jake Larson scored 26 from the floor, including four of 12 from behind the arc. Steven Colon put up 14, Cooper Berg added 12 and John Schrader, a sophomore, contributed 10.

Friday night’s defeat was the Rangers’ second to Woodbury this year. The last time these two went head-to-head, Woodbury squeaked out a three-point victory on Jan. 27 in Forest Lake.
