The Breakdown Sports showcase features several of the top teams from northeast Minnesota.

Mountain Iron-Buhl, the No. 1 team in Minnesota Basketball News' Class 1A girls' basketball rankings, earns the spotlight at this year's Breakdown Sports Martin Luther King Jr. Classic.

The 14-team event takes place Jan. 16 at Romano Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Minnesota-Duluth and features several of the top girls' and boys' teams from the state's northeast region.

The Mountain Iron-Buhl girls take on Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in the showcase opener at 10 a.m.

Led this year by Chelsea Mason (22.2 points per game), Mya Buffetta (9.5 ppg) and Mary Burke (19.5 ppg), the Rangers improved to 11-0 overall following a victory over International Falls on Jan. 9.

The team looks formidable, having already defeated No. 3-1A Goodhue, No. 2-1A Maranatha Christian Academy, No. 10-2A Esko and No. 5-2A Cromwell early this season, but extending the streak likely won't be easy against the Thunderbirds, who feature standout Halley Busse and who have played well against ranked teams this year.

G-F-W (5-4) lost to No. 8-1A Cedar Mountain-Comfrey and No. 4-2A Norwood Young America by a combined 11 points.

The schedule also includes a matchup between Annandale and Esko in the other girls' game, while the boys' field includes No. 3-2A Annandale, No. 7-2A Esko, Nevis, Mt. Iron-Buhl and Perham

The slate concludes with what promises to be a battle of big men, as 6-foot-9 Cody Carlson and Duluth East go head to head with 6-7 Brock Schrom and Grand Rapids at 7:30 p.m. The teams met in Grand Rapids on Dec. 13, with the Thunderhawks recording a 60-43 victory.

Here is a full schedule of the day's games:
