In a highly anticipated matchup that featured two of the best guards in the state, Champlin Park and McKinley Wright delivered a 91-84 victory over Apple Valley and Tre Jones.

Both Wright and Jones gave big-game performances but Wright got more support. Wright, a Dayton recruit, finished with a team-high 27 points to lead the Rebels, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A by Minnesota Basketball News, past the No. 6-4A Eagles.

Marquette recruit Theo John provided 20 points for Champlin Park, 14 of which came in the second half. Josiah Strong finished with 16 for the Rebels (2-0) and Marcus Hill added 11.

Champlin Park jumped out to a 24-9 lead in the first half and led 44-36 at halftime behind Wright’s 18 first-half points.

Jones finished with 28 points to keep Apple Valley (2-1) close, and he got some help from Luke Martens and Ely Hendrickson but it wasn’t enough. Martens finished with 15 points and Hendrickson hit four three-pointers in the second half to finish with 12 points in the game.

John dominated down the stretch and stemmed any change in momentum early in the second half with a big dunk that extended the lead back nine after Martens hit a three-pointer to make it a seven-point game.
