Orono’s depth proved too much for Fergus Falls to handle Saturday, winning 81-68 at Hopkins High School in the Breakdown Sports Tip Off Classic.

Thomas Lecy hit seven three-pointers and Colton Codute added 24 for the Spartans. Lecy hit five of those three-pointers in the first half and hit two more in the second half to finish with 21 points. Codute scored 16 of his 24 in the second half.

The Otters (1-1), ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by Minnesota Basketball News, overcame early turnovers to trail 36-32 at halftime.

No. 9-3A Orono (3-1) pulled away in the second half as Codute got going offensively.

Fergus Falls’ big three featuring all-state players Matthew Monke, Nathan Rund and Haarison Christensen struggled to find any offensive rhythm. Monke dealt with foul trouble while Rund scored all but eight of his 18 points from the free-throw line.

Matthew Johnson scored 12 points, including 10 in the second half for the Otters. Elijah Colbeck added 15 for Fergus Falls.
