Hopkins senior guard Amir Coffey was named Minnesota's 2016  Mr. Basketball on Monday.

Coffey led the Royals to a 31-1 record and their first championship since 2011, scoring 19 points in the Class 4A title game against Lakeville North on Saturday. He is the sixth Hopkins player to be named Mr. Basketball.

The son of former University of Minnesota and Timberwolves star Richard Coffey, Amir averaged 19.9 points per game during the regular season and will continue his basketball career with the Gophers. His sister, Nia Coffey, currently plays for Northwestern.

Other finalists for the award: Johnny Beeininga (Wayzata), Brock Bertram (Apple Valley), Michael Hurt (Rochester John Marshall) and Steffon Mitchell (Shakopee).

The Mr. Basketball is an annual award recognizing excellence in Minnesota high school boys' basketball and given to the top senior in the state.

A nine-member committee, headed by Ken Lien since 1977, makes its selection based on watching film from over 120 high school games, creating reviews on each player. The winner is then invited to an honorary dinner, along with the Ms. Basketball Minnesota winner, usually held in April.
