All-anything teams, like the recently published Star Tribune All-Metro boys’ basketball teams, are inherently controversial. Selecting the best of the best from across an area as vast as the Twin Cities can be daunting. There always seems to be deserving players who just miss the cut.

Holy Family center Justin Dahl, a 6-11 center, was one of those players who was worthy of making one of the three teams. He wasn’t nominated, however, because Holy Family coach Matt Thuli never received a ballot due to an administrative error.

Admittedly, this isn’t much of a salve, but Dahl stood out for the Fire in a mediocre season — Holy Family finished 14-14. He averaged 19 points and 16.5 rebounds per game and blocked 97 shots.

“He had a phenomenal year, considering everything. He pretty much saw double- and triple-teams all year,” Thuli said.

Dahl completed his career at Holy Family as the school’s record-holder for career points (1,190) and career rebounds (1,094). He signed in November with Northern Iowa, a program that qualified for the NCAA Division I men’s’ basketball tournament.

“He’s pretty excited about that,” Thuli said.

Edina taps volleyball coach

Edina has hired former University of Illinois volleyball player Sue Webber to be its volleyball coach, replacing Stephanie Chapek. Webber graduated from Illinois in 2001 and has been a college coach at Olivet Nazarene, St. Louis University and Northern Colorado University before moving to the Twin Cities to coach for the Vital Volleyball Club in Eden Prairie.

Worth noting

• Armstrong took second place at the Minnesota High School Weightlifting Meet on March 7 at Lakeville South. Nate Oelke won the 77-kilogram weight class with a state-record total lift of 267 kilograms (116 snatch, 151 clean and jerk). Destiny Young won the girls’ 48-kilogram class with a state-record combined lift of 119 kilos (53 snatch, 66 clean and jerk). Kevin Trihm and Natasha Rice also took first place in their respective weight classes — Trihm at 69 kilos, Rice in the girls’ 75 kilo division. The Falcons rolled up 29 team points (includes boys and girls). Burnsville won the meet with 58 team points.

• Minnehaha Academy freshman guard Terra Rhoades put together her best three-game stretch of the season, scoring in double-figures in three games in the Class 2A, Section 4 girls’ basketball tournament. She helped the Redhawks advance to the state tournament for the seventh time in the past eight seasons. Rhoades averaged 16.3 points per game in the playoffs with a career-high 20 points in a semifinal victory over St. Agnes.
