Interception helps Mankato West past Chanhassen

 

CLASS 5A

• SECTION 2: Charlie Schwartz intercepted a pass in the end zone to preserve top-seeded Mankato West’s 38-35 victory over fourth-seeded Chanhassen. After Mankato West took a 38-35 lead on a 22-yard field goal with 1 minute, 30 seconds remaining, Chanhassen drove inside the Scarlets 10-yard line with 1:10 remaining.

• SECTION 3: Zach Ubben threw two TD passes and Neal Walsh returned a punt 47 yards for a TD to pace top-seeded Bloomington Jefferson to a 22-7 victory over Apple Valley.

• SECTION 4: Lucas Buller ran for two TDs and threw an 80-yard TD pass to help third-seeded Mahtomedi outlast Cooper 20-14.

• SECTION 5: Garrett Gardner rushed for 189 yards and four TDs and Jakobi Jackson rushed for 140 yards to help St. Paul Central outlast Hastings 42-34. Hastings got within one point late in the fourth quarter, but Gardner’s fourth TD of the game sealed the victory. Gardner led the Minutemen’s defense with 11 tackles.

• SECTION 7: John Santiago ran for 250 yards and two TDs and Blake Moreno caught two TD passes to lead third-seeded St. Francis to a 40-26 victory over host Brainerd, the No. 2 seed. Jonah Woullett had two interceptions for St. Francis. … Top-seeded Bemidji took advantage of two Chisago Lakes turnovers to open a 14-point lead in the first quarter en route to a 28-14 victory over the fourth-seeded Wildcats.

 

CLASS 4A

• SECTION 2: Two-time defending Class 4A state champion Hutchinson cruised to a 70-0 victory over Mankato East. Seven different players scored for the Tigers, who earned their 35th consecutive victory. The Hutchinson defense has given up only five TDs this season.

• SECTION 3: Hank Hopkins threw four TD passes — including a 64-yard TD on the opening play — and ran for a TD to spark Holy Family to a 35-7 victory over St. Paul Highland Park. … Holy Angels scored on six consecutive possessions en route to a 54-13 victory over Richfield.

• SECTION 4: Sam Westby returned two interceptions for TDs and ran 76 yards for a TD to lead Hill-Murray past St. Paul Johnson 54-34. … Malik Holmes rushed for three TDs and Dan Pietruszewski passed for a TD and ran for another to lead South St. Paul to a 61-19 victory over North Branch.

 

• SECTION 5: C.J. Schwintek rushed for 198 yards and a TD and Michael Veldman threw three TD passes to lead No. 1-seeded Becker past Delano, 40-7. … David McCuskey ran for a TD and returned an interception 67 yards for a TD to to pace Orono to a 43-7 victory over Zimmerman.

• SECTION 6: Ricky Floyd (126 yards, two TDs) and Nate Barry (101 yards, four TDs) combined to lead Benilde-St. Margaret’s to a 48-0 victory over St. Anthony. … Top-seeded DeLaSalle advanced to the section championship game with a 61-13 victory over St. Anthony.

• SECTION 7: Kole Zuidmulder’s 1-yard TD run and ensuing pass to Zack Brendon for a two-point conversion with 35 seconds remaining lifted Hermantown to a 22-21 victory over Princeton.

 

CLASS 3A

• SECTION 2: Glencoe-Silver Lake scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to rally for a 27-13 victory over Watertown-Mayer. Keaton Anderson threw two TD passes and Teddy Petersen rushed for 178 yards and a TD to lead the Panthers. … Top-seeded Providence Academy outlasted Breck 7-0 on Henry Van Dellen’s 27-yard TD pass to Matt Richelson in the first quarter.

• SECTION 3: Luke Narveson ran for two TDs and passed for three to lead Belle Plaine to a 58-25 victory over Worthington.

• SECTION 4: D’Aireus Mock ran for 245 yards and four TDs to lead Columbia Heights past Minnehaha Academy 48-28. Mock also caught a 77-yard TD pass and had two interceptions on defense. … Joshua Tietz passed for 191 yards and three TDs to lead top-seeded St. Croix Lutheran past St. Paul Como Park 41-6.

 

CLASS 2A

• SECTION 2: Noah Peterson scored three TDs and Zach Heiland rushed for 141 yards and a TD as Norwood Young America ran past Zumbrota-Mazeppa 49-12.

• SECTION 4: Senior Dylan Kosek rushed for 214 yards and scored all four of his team’s TDs to lead Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted to a 28-12 victory over St. Agnes.

 

CLASS 1A

• SECTION 8: Two-time defending Class 1A state champion Mahnomen advanced with a 42-0 victory over Fertile-Beltrami. The victory was Mahnomen’s 38th consecutive.
