Former Cooper star Rashad Vaughn plans to announce his college choice on Tuesday, according to reports on Twitter. That’s three days later than he originally indicated.

Vaughn, a 6-6 guard who transferred before this school year to Findlay Prep of Henderson, Nev., has narrowed his college list to Iowa State, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina and UNLV.

He was recently named to play in McDonald’s All-American high school game on April 2 in Chicago. Vaughn is averaging 20.4 points and 4.8 assists for Findlay Prep (23-4) and shooting 48 percent on three-pointers.

 

U softball team opens with sweep

The Gophers softball team opened its season with an 8-2 victory over Murray State in the Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, La. Junior shortstop Tyler Walker had a three-run triple for Minnesota in the second inning. Freshman Sara Groenewegen, a righthander from White Rock, British Columbia, had a no-hitter for 6⅓ innings and gave up no runs in her seven innings. The Rockets scored twice in the bottom of the eighth.

Minnesota then beat No. 17-rated Louisiana State 1-0 on Sara Moulton’s two-hitter. She struck out six.

The Gophers scored the game’s only run when Walker singled in the first inning and later scored on a passed ball. The victory was the 100th for Gophers coach Jessica Allister in her four seasons at Minnesota.

• Ohio State edged the Gophers women’s gymnastics team 185.775 to 184.875 in Columbus. Sophomore Lindsay Mable of Minnesota won the all-around with a score of 39.175, led a top four sweep for the visitors in floor exercise (9.925), and tied for first in vault (9.900).

• Derek Toomey of the Gophers won the 50-yard freestyle in 19.93 seconds and led off the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:20.14) on the first day of the Minnesota Challenge at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Other individual winners for the host team were Eric Sande in the 500 freestyle (4:27.99) and DJ Friesch in the 200 individual medley (1:50.51).

• South Dakota State got off to a strong start in the women’s competition at the Minnesota Challenge, winning three of the five events. Shauna Foor of the Jackrabbits won the 50 freestyle (24.48) and swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay.

• Lynx forward Maya Moore led her Shanxi Xing Rui team in China to a final regular-season record of 19-3. She had 40 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and six steals in Shanxi’s most recent game Tuesday and will play in the Chinese All-Star game on Sunday. … Janel McCarville, a Lynx center playing for CCC Polkowice this offseason, was named a reserve for the Polish All-Star game on Feb. 15.
